SolarWeevils, Tom Bugs

SolarWeevils is the name for a public sound installation, created by instrument maker and engineer, Tom Bugs. SolarWeevils are small devices which swarm among the trees outside in the Largo do Século, Bairro Alto and spend their days storing solar energy. As night falls, the Weevils awake to give an electronic dusk-chorus - using the power stored through the day, their sounds mutate through squeak’n’chirrup as the energy drains before they fall back asleep. SolarWeevils continues Tom Bug’s explorations into tactile, self-made musical instruments and interfaces.

Tom Bugs inhabits the fertile border between arts and science. Driven by a strong DIY ethic, he is custom; hand-built electronic audio devices have gained him an international reputation in the field of DIT electronics (refer to BugBrand works). Alongside this he works as a sound engineer and musician, playing his own hand-made instruments and large scale modular synths.

About the Creator

With a background in music and engineering, Tom Bugs has been working with electronics for some years, gaining an international reputation for his BugBrand, handmade devises and interfaces.

Beginning with circuit bending and simple guitar stomp boxes and gradually sinking deep into the circuitry for work on handmade noise systems and large-scale modular synths. Tom’s work tries to mix the worlds of art and science by opening up technological ideas to new controls and areas of chance or controlled chaos. His recent work is almost entirely with analogue electronics, with his ideas often taking existing designs, twisting them a bit and then combining and presenting them in new ways. Alongside his solo music and design projects, Tom builds devices for musicians, setting installations and collaborating in technical arts and musical projects.
