Crackle Canvas, Tom Verbruggen, NL

‘Crackle-Canvas’ is the name for a series of the ’sound-objects’, which Tom Verbruggen, has been making and performing. Simply put, ‘Crackle-Canvas’ is a set of interactive paintings, which can be played to produce sound/noise.
Each individual ’sound-painting’ is made up of a canvas, speaker, switches, knobs and wires, which can be plugged and played into the canvas, to make the sound-painting.

The first ‘Crackle Canvas’ works, were created on white canvas and were played by Verbruggen, within live gallery and performance settings. The second and third series experimented more with color, using for example, painted black canvas and extending the wire colors but were played for the most by myself and by invited audience members during gallery-based performances. The most recent version of the Crackle-Canvas (2008), which will be shown at UM and for the first time, in Portugal, have a screen-printed canvas-interface. This was created with the intention of exploring how, when the canvas are left in the gallery, the public may feel more open to playing them independently.
